Makerspace Policies
  • Consider other members' rights and privileges.
  • Never use equipment that you have not been trained on or cleared to use.
  • Always treat members and staff with the fullest respect and courtesy at all times.
  • Always accept the fullest responsibility for any damage to equipment due to any misuse of the equipment.
  • Never use Makerspace Western Kentucky (MWK) facilities or equipment to alter the use of, or manufacture weapons of any kind.
  • When leaving an area that you have been working in, you must return it to a state that is as it was or better than when you started work. You are responsible for cleaning up after yourself each time that you utilize an area. Please don’t leave your mess for others to clean up.
  • Equipment, machines, classroom space, and other areas of MWK may be reserved from time to time for classes or workshops. Please check the calendar of events to ensure that the equipment you hope to use isn’t reserved for any reason. Reservations for these events will be made a minimum of 1 week in advance. There is a “Members Only” section of the website. You will be given access to this when you become a member of MWK.
The Shop Specific Rules
  • Appropriate eye and ear protection should be worn at all times while in the shop area regardless of whether it is you working on the machinery or not.
  • Never start a conversation with someone that is using a piece of machinery; always wait for them to stop and get their attention visually, not physically or verbally.
  • No one may use any workshop equipment without being authorized to do so.
  • Never touch or bump anyone that is using a piece of machinery.
  • No pets are allowed in any of the shop areas.
  • No wet or green wood materials are to be run through any of the woodshop machines.
  • Replacement costs due to neglect by breaking any of these rules will be the responsibility of the individual who caused the damage.
  • Never attempt to oil, clean, adjust, or repair any machine while it is running. Do not attempt to perform any of these tasks unless you are properly trained and authorized to do so.
  • Never disable or damage safety devices on machines.
  • Never leave a machine running unattended.
  • It is your duty to inform the shop manager or a board member of any equipment that has had its safety features disabled or damaged.
  • Always keep hands, hair, feet, and clothing clear of all moving machinery. Loose-fitting clothing such as baggy sweatshirts, ties, or long-sleeved shirts with open cuffs is not allowed within 10 feet of any running machine.
  • Always deburr sharp edges of freshly cut stock. This includes any pieces of stock that are going into the rack. This will help eliminate personal injury from sharp, jagged edges.
  • Never work at a pace that you are not comfortable with, as rushing could lead to mistakes and injuries.
  • Keep the floors clean of oil, grease, or other liquids. In the event of a spill, stop all work in that area until it has been safely cleaned up.
  • All hazardous materials need written permission to be brought in and used at the makerspace. A list of already approved hazardous materials will be posted in the shop area.
  • Please stop all work with enough time to clean up any messes that you have made and to return the shop area you are working back to the state it was in before you arrived or cleaner.
  • If at any time you discover any of the equipment, machinery, and/or tools are not functioning properly, stop using the malfunctioning equipment immediately and contact the shop manager or a board member. Contact information for the relevant parties will be posted in various locations throughout the makerspace.
  • When leaving an area that you have been working in, you must return it to a state that is as it was or better than when you started work. You are responsible for cleaning up after yourself each time that you utilize an area. Please don’t leave your mess for others to clean up.
